Stella sat down on the stairs next to Dennis.

“How long have you been sitting here?”

Dennis glanced at the watch he had around his wrist and shrugged. “About five hours, I guess.”

“Break-ups suck, don’t they?” Stella leaned closer and rested her head on Dennis’ shoulder which surprised him but he didn’t pull back and she wrapped her arm around his back; he did the same to her.

“You would be so much more convincing if you had in fact been through a break-up which you haven’t in the last decade.”

“Don’t say that,” Stella giggled. “It makes me feel old.”

“That would mean I’m old,” Dennis joined in. “But we aren’t old. We are in the prime of our lives, Star.”

She raised her head off his shoulder and looked at him, slightly surprised. “Nobody has called me that for years.”

Dennis nodded. “I know. I have always been the only one to call you so and I’ve stopped calling you that when you accepted Joseph’s proposal.”

“Now it’s my fault because you can’t commit?” Stella teased.

“Who should I commit to? The nice, sweet girls, the ones I like, are never really interested in me, at least not for long. You know how it is just as well as I do. You were the first and possibly only woman I really cared about and could have settled down with.”

Stella pulled back. “That’s enough, Dennis. We really don’t want to go there. You know I chose Joseph and I would never chance my mind about that.”

“I know.” Dennis shook his head and got up. “I have stopped really caring about you years ago. Star, not even I am that persistent.” He said, turning away from Stella and walking away.
