C. and I have been talking about poetry over the last few days and he sent me a ton of his to read. I have read bits and pieces and I actually like it which is quite a feat to accomplish because poetry and me have never really been friends. Yesterday, he told me to give it a try, start with something fairly simple, namely the haiku.

Now, with sixty-six under my belt, I'll move on to tanka and see how that works out for me. It's actually a lot of fun. And from reading some of his tuff, I leaned something really, really cool: it doesn't have to be complicated and convoluted. It can be fairly easy and about the silliest things. I'll probably post some sooner or later.
gmail is really fucking with me today just to piss me off. I'm not really doing anything and still haven't found out my CAE score because as expected, I lost the paperwork with the details on how to get my test score. Who would have guessed that I'd be able to misplace something with all my piles of paper all over the room? Gotta call the weird man to ask him if he can help me with it. I guess he's probably able to access the data anyway and if not, well, they have to send me a real certificate, right? ... I hope they do because otherwise, well, I'd be screwed. Nothing unusual.

Sounds like I'm having a shitty day when I'm not. I don't know, I just want to be able to access fucking gmail and google docs so I can get some stuff done and force myself to write more for my crack AU because the prompts are really weighing me down and I can only complete three of the four flavors I'm doing by getting the crack AU written and I've been really, really lazy with it and I want to start posting, damn it. Because there are some real good things in it and I hate having uncompleted flavors jut because I don't feel like writing the AU. Next time, I'll have to find a different way if I write a multiple chapter story.

in other news ... I really don't care enough right now. I should get writing or something. I should do something.

Geist

Apr. 8th, 2009 11:48 pm

Summary:
Things couldn’t be better for Hobbie right now.
Notes: This takes place in an alternate future where Wes did get married to Shirley after he accidentally proposed to her shortly before drinking / sacrifice.
This was supposed to be a one-shot but the plot got out of hand and now demands to be written in its entirety, so here’s part one of a longer AU story with 14 parts.

The alarm clock rang at 7.30am and even before Hobbie could make an effort to reach for it, he heard it being flung against the wall but was too lazy to complain. He smiled sleepily as he felt strong arms wrap themselves around him but didn’t open his eyes. He had been awake for a while now, his inner clock having woken him on time just like it always did.

“Go back to sleep,” a voice, husky from sleep, whispered into his ear. “It’s too early to get up on a Saturday. Let’s just stay in bed all day.”

“I’m sure Vince would love that,” Hobbie chuckled as the arms pulled him closer his bare back pressed to the other man’s torso. “He complains about us having too much sex as it is already and we wanted to go to the movies with the kids today, Shane. Remember?”

“We can do that tomorrow. I think we need to stay in bed all day.” He planted soft kissed along Hobbie’s slightly freckled shoulders, hoping to keep his lover in bed longer.

“We’re not on our honeymoon or teenagers; we don’t get to stay in bed all day anymore.”

“Honeymoon,” Shane repeated longingly, his face between Hobbie’s shoulder blades on a spot Hobbie was a bit ticklish at. “We sure could use another honeymoon.”

“We’re not even married and even that hasn’t kept us from already having more than one honeymoon. Let’s not exaggerate.”

Hobbie rolled around without pulling out of Shane’s embrace so he could look into the other man’s grey eyes, resting his forehead on Shane’s and placing one hand on Shane’s neck so he could get a grip at man’s brown hair, tugging at it lightly.

“Can we have a honeymoon if we get married?” Shane asked, running one of his hands absently up and down Hobbie’s bare back.

“Sure we can,” Hobbie laughed, not taking the suggestion very serious. “But do you really think that getting married is such a good idea? We’ve been doing perfectly fine not being married for seven years now. Why should we change that? You don’t have a good track record with marriages, so I wouldn’t want to ruin this by marrying you.” He placed a lofty kiss on Shane’s lips.

“You’re different,” Shane insisted. “Never got married to a guy before and don’t think I’d find another I’d want to get married to.” His hand that had been wandering lower and lower came to rest on Hobbie’s bum and Shane flashed him a lopsided grin. “Besides, if we get married, you’ll officially be my bitch.”

“Now that’s tempting,” Hobbie smirked. “You’re serious about this, aren’t you?”

“Yeah,” Shane drawled. “Want me to get down to one knee and do it right?”

“No need to, you know the answer.” He pulled Shane’s face closer, kissing him fiercely until they were both out of breath.

***

“Dad, Shane, are you having sex or can I come in?” Vincent’s voice interrupted the men’s post-coitus cuddling through the closed door.

“Come in, Vince,” Hobbie called back. “We’re decent.”

“Are you ever?” Hobbie’s teenage son asked when he opened the door to see his father and his father’s boyfriend snuggling in bed. He didn’t mind the fact that his father had a more than healthy sex life and had never felt resentful towards Shane for breaking up his parents’ relationship.

“True,” Shane laughed. “Be a dear and get your dad and me some underwear.”

“I’m the only teenager who ever has to do that sort of stuff,” Vincent mock-complained as he walked over to the closet and tossed the men on the bed a pair of boxers and a pair of boxer briefs, keeping his back turned to them while they put them on.

“You’re also the only teenager who has a dad as hot as Michael,” Shane pointed out. “And you always freak when you see me naked, otherwise I’d walk through the house naked all day.”

“I’d stop coming here if you did that,” Vincent warned Shane, turning around.

“We have news to break to you,” Shane said in a cheery voice.

Vincent sat on the bed where Hobbie and Shane had sat up and were now exchanging slightly nervous looks. The last time this had happened they had announced that they were thinking about adopting a child which had led to the inclusion of Kenzie, his now three year old sister.

“Am I getting another sibling?” Vincent guessed to see if that helped his father. Hobbie still felt slightly guilty for leaving Isobel for Shane all those years ago even though Vincent had told him repeatedly that he liked things a lot better the way they were now. Back then, Isobel and Hobbie had agreed that each of them should get to spend equal time with Vincent, their past partnership making a friendship after the break-up possible. In the past two years however, Vincent had started spending more and more time at his father’s house just because it felt so much more like home, like family.

Shane shook his head. “Nice guess, but no although I guess we could look into adopting again sometime in the future.”

“Will you take one step after the other?” Hobbie shot at him, boxing him in the ribs playfully before he turned to Vincent. “Shane’s planning to make an honest man out of me.”

Vincent looked at the men, his mouth agape. “That’s awesome,” he finally managed, hugging his father, then Shane. “Have you discussed the most important details yet?”

“Yeah,” Shane nodded, a broad grin on his face. “The honeymoon’s gonna last forever.”

“Eww, too much information, man.” Vincent pulled back slightly, making noises as if going to puke. “I’m talking about who’s taking whose name.”

Hobbie and Shane looked at each other amused. They hadn’t thought about that yet; this was something only Vincent would think of immediately.

“Michael’s my bitch, he should take my name,” Shane said decisively.

“I’m so not doing that,” Hobbie protested. “I’m not walking through this world as Derek Michael Doyle. I might as well go out and have my name legally changed to Sparkling Diamond.”

Vincent doubled over laughing while Shane looked at Hobbie in confusion, cursing his lover for his college education, something that Shane had never had.

“DMD stands for diamond,” Vincent explained through fits of laughter. “Maybe you should go with it, dad. Sparkling Diamond sounds disco.”

Now clued in, Shane laughed too.

“And that’s exactly what I’m going for,” Hobbie snickered. “You’d of course have to change your name to Sparkling Diamond, jr. if I went through with it. You know that, right?”

“Kenzie would actually like that,” Shane laughed. “Sparkling Diamond … That doesn’t sound too bad.”

“You call me that once and we’re canceling the honeymoon,” Hobbie threatened.

I started thinking about an alternate timeline story and feel like posting the outline for it. The prompt I was going with was "foolishness" and the plot has developed a lot since but I just want to post the original. I'm working on the story now. A lot of elements are still the same.

In an alternate universe where Wes and Shirley get married and the Misfits are disbanded shortly thereafter (why? Plot hole. It doesn’t matter, it’s an alternate timeline, it just happens), Wes and Hobbie meet years later after having grown apart.

Wes and Shirley have gotten divorced a while back and Wes has been trying to get back in touch with Hobbie ever since (after having lots of break-up sex of course).

Like in the original timeline, Hobbie and Isobel have a son, Vincent, but they stay together after the one night stand (because Wes never interfered) and raise Vincent together for a time until Hobbie somehow meets Shane Doyle (the convict from the “You Can’t Go Home Again” storyline) and they fall for each other. They have been together for a while by the time Wes comes back into Hobbie’s life.

Wes sees Hobbie with his family that also includes an adoptive daughter (maybe even Kaare) and Isobel as the two stayed friends and starts to realize the mistake he has made as it could be him in Shane’s place.

I've been working on my Spanish report. i've covered Pinochet's backstory until 08/23/1973 and I'm doing Allende's politics in 1970 to 1973 right now to catch up to the point where his and Pinochet's lives really collide. But because I wanted to do something else and talk a bit and whatever, maybe I just like to listen to my voice, I took my notes and talked them through while recording it. I go into tangents every once in a while which of course I won't do when I'm doing the report but this was mostly so I could hear everything out loud in my own words to see if I understood what was going on and stuff. I've talked for forty minutes ... Yes, I got hung up on Lucia's name a few times and talked a bit about Prats and in the end it will be a lot shorter because I will trim it down a lot and not go on a tangent about having been in the building that houses El Mercurio and other fun stuff like I did this time but it's impressive that I can just sit on my bed and talk for forty minutes straight knowing nobody is listening. And I recorded it all. Why? No idea. I think I feel pretty lame just sitting on my bed talking to myself and of course sitting on my bed with a mic is a lot better because this way it feels as if I've actually produced something. I listened to a podcast the other day where they were talking about the sense of accomplishment artists get compared to writers because artists have something they can show around when asked what they did and people can look at it and say they like it, with writers it's a lot harder because ... it is. And so I felt like I wouldn't be wasting so much of my time if I actually recorded that thing even though I know exactly that i won't ever listen to it again. Or maybe I will at some point and then I'll feel like posting one or two clips for V's enjoyment because she's probably the only one who will really understand what the heck I'm talking about.

I have uploaded the OLMV report to esnips and am considering posting it here to showcase my exaggeratedly empassioned opinion about The Second Hut and Silly's very naturally-sounding supposed opinion about Good Advice Is Rarer Than Rubies, an opinion she aquired when she read the script because I seriously doubt that she would have been able to extract that stuff from the story by herself which doesn't mean I don't love Silly, I just don't think literature is her strong suit just like I don't think feigning enthusiasm is her forte. Or writing more or less natural dialogue or coming up with original concepts to distinguish our recording from others. Or respecting punctuation. nah, I love her.

Kyle's story is getting out of control. I have written about 2k and not much has really happened with the exception of him showcasing his social awkwardness and geekiness but a plot will follow and an unexpected character has sneaked into the novel: Rob Liefeld, artist extraordinaire! Anna, Kyle's voice of reason, loves Rob Liefeld just like I love Rob Liefeld. he's just so bad that it's good. Yesterday I spent way too much time reading articles about Liefeld and laughing really, really hard at his art. One of my problems with art is that i don't seem able to really appreciate it. I can see if something is good or bad but I have to pay close attention to some of the stuff to notice just how fucked up Rob's art is and those articles really help and now I feel like reading Youngblood. There are several Liefeld drinking games but playing them is suicide. There was something in one article that I enjoyed a lot:

A fun Liefeld drinking game: take a shot for every pouch he draws on a character.  Oh great, now you have alcohol poisoning.

So yeah, Rob is in my novel now:

Anna has a sick fascination with Rob Liefeld, a phenomenon from the 90ies who made it big despite – or maybe because – his apparent inability to understand human anatomy or draw feet, his habit to add pouches upon pouches to  everything and his love for big guns – REALLY BIG GUNS. Nobody can really explain why Rob Liefeld was so popular in the 90ies, he just was and it’s more than slightly embarrassing for the medium as a whole but Anna insists on it being so bad that it’s good again.

And I don't plan to make the novel a Rob Liefeld bash-fest, he just came up. Maybe I should start working on adding a plot to the story now though. Later, when I've done more Spanish that is. But I want to throw Jun Bob Kim's name in there somewhere becuase I don't want to wait till November till I finally get to write about him. Maybe Kyle can walk into the shop when two customers are praising some Kev/Jun Bob colaboration. for universe-building purposes although I already managed to insert Maya into the story (Anna’s roommate sometimes helps out on busy weekends). the timeline is of course totally fucked up but that's how it's always been in my universe. So what if this is supposed to happen about 16 years after Letting Go and for some reason in Letting Go the same world-wide events are happening as in this story? It doesn't matter. Besides I can change Anna's roommate and just have it happen at the same time as Finding Me / Letting Go and have Janna come into the store or have Matt Hoover do a signing for some reason. Yub, that probably fits better. And in Letting Go I can mention Janna being friends with Anna or have her have a cameo without even mentioning her other connections. I love talking to myself about my timeline on my lj because this way I can spot problems better because I can't just say, "nobody will notice" and stop thinking about it.

back to work.

kyle

Jan. 1st, 2009 07:36 pm
i just found a way to tie Kyle's story in with my universe although only arbitrarily but that's why it might work. Have Kev's name dropped here or there, have Anna mention Maya. Yub, this could work out pretty well and I decided that the setting is Lowell. Kyle is a dear but i have to admit that the boy is a total dork and I never got to write something like this, just throw in references to geeky stuff left and right because I feel like it. It's fun. It's still a bit of a problem that his name is Kyle and if I do introduce a character called Jennie, I might regret it but who else could i go with? I don't like Kyle/Donna and Kyle/Alex just wasn't significant enough. it might also not be the best idea to write about a character I don't really know but he wants to be Kyle, so that's how it's going to be.

I barely have time to nod before he turns and walks away. Sometimes I feel like such a cliché. My childhood friend and I have grown apart and now he’s the cool jock dating the girl of my dreams and I get to tutor her. You can probably find that in just about any young adults’ novel, it would even work out perfectly as a comic book plot. Heck, they used it in the Spider-Man movie (which was awesome although not as good as the second one and of course I have my problems with the Green Goblin looking like he’d just stepped out of Power Rangers, but those were my main problems with it).

Prompt: I’ll argue the point no longer, only cry for you a bit (December 6 for [livejournal.com profile] 31_days)

One thing Jason was not good at was getting his heart broken. )

prompt: but if I try to find you there are only the shadows (December 17 for [livejournal.com profile] 31_days)

After Kev had skipped town, Janna had tried to track him down much to her parents’ dismay and so she had been sent to Ireland with her brother to clear her head.

And when she came back for senior year, she still kept quiet and didn’t talk about it but that didn’t mean she had forgotten about the English teacher but her investigations reached dead ends every single time, partially because she didn’t have the contacts he had had and his friends were nice but not willing to help her.

“It’s the best for both of you,” Hobbie had told her. “If he ever wants to talk to you again he’ll get in touch with you. It would be the best to just move on. You’re not the first girl whose heart Kev has broken, darling.”

She had slowly moved on, sometimes even forgetting that she missed him but that didn’t mean she had ever forgotten him – she never would. Sometimes when she couldn’t avoid it, she drove or walked by his house and her heart tightened in her chest and she hated herself for what she had done to him; for having made him leave.

And Janna knew that Hobbie was right. She had to get over him. Not for him but for herself. She had to stop thinking about him because no matter how much time she spent looking for him, even if she found him, she would never find what she was looking for.
