You’re All I Have: The first few seconds tell you that this is the CD you want to be listening to. The melody rocks, has so much depth, is catchy and the lyrics are beautiful, they make you feel as if you are going through this situation right now, it’s so deep, so genuine. It’s a typical Snow Patrol song, one that will stick with you, that just gets you, no matter if you’re sixteen or sixty, it speaks of something almost everybody has had to deal with at some moment of their life.
Hands Open: Very different than the first song, this one is very everyday-based, and rooted in reality, it hurts to listen to it but you still want to listen to it over and over again. The lyrics and the instruments (that are very present in this one) co-exist peacefully, they even complete each other exactly like it should be in a good song. It includes the EP’s title “Eyes Open” in the lyrics and this fits perfectly.
Chasing Cars: Emotional. You only need to listen to the first few seconds of this song to feel sad yourself, it is so emotional, it captures feelings perfectly, it is sad but at the same time not too off-beat to make you want to jump out of the window or something. It is just perfectly balanced. One of the best Snow Patrol songs ever, I would say. It’s hard to describe it, it is just so complex, so loaded with feeling. It fits in perfectly with the first two songs and is very different at the same time, showing yet another totally different aspect of love.
Shut Your Eyes: An EP named “Eyes Open” usually doesn’t have a song in it called “Shut Your Eyes”, but this one has. This feels different from all of the other Snow Patrol songs I know. The instruments are very present, but the lyrics overshadow them, not too much but in a way that makes them just perfect. A small chorus that I have never heard in a Snow Patrol song makes it so different, so unique. Not my favourite song, but a very beautiful one.
It’s Beginning To Get To Me: Another break-up song, but totally different. I wonder how a band can capture so many different impressions of love (also considering that they already have a few albums out). This could be a big hit, it is catchy, has a great musical part and is something you could imagine listening to on a radio station. This song is one you could listen to over and over again without ever getting tired of it.
You Could Be Happy: The melody of this one is very different, there is this music box theme that doesn’t become annoying after a while and blends in perfectly with the other musical aspects. In this song you can see that the band is trying to do something new and what they achieve with it is a unique sound that sticks with you. It deals with someone who hopes the girl he loves is happy, even if she isn’t with him. The notion of that alone is very beautiful and sad and it has been perfectly captured in this song.
Make This Go On Forever: When hearing this song you really wish this CD would go on forever but it doesn’t, it just goes on for 5min47, making it the longest song on this CD. This is a very moving song about a break-up. “I can’t be as sorry as you think I should / But I still love you more than anyone else could” describes everything perfectly. Who doesn’t feel this was after a break-up? There is a chorus in this song, not as strong and present as in “Shut Your Eyes”, but still very obvious. It ends with a plea for help.
Set The Fire To The Third Bar: This song features Martha Wainwright, who is somehow related to the great Rufus Wainwright who many know from one place or another. Martha’s voice fits in perfectly with the rest of the song, the voices compliment each other perfectly.
Headlights On Dark Roads: A very vivid song with livelier lyrics. This one uses the instruments very predominantly, making it different from the first few. This is a song to fall in love with. A catchy one you want to move to.
Open Your Eyes: The last song is more on a vocal basis although the instruments are still there. You just wish a guy like this would come into your life, free you from your demons, show you that you can do better. This won’t happen, but when listening to this song you wish for someone who loves you. And you’d immediately would open your eyes if this guy asked you to. This would have been the perfect way to end this CD, so it came as a surprise to find another song.
The Finish Line: This is an almost a capella song and wow. It couldn’t be better. “It’s like the finish line where everything ends.” Is there a better way to finish?
OVERALL:
All the songs deal with one subject: Love. But everyone focuses on a different aspect of love, nothing is repeated over and over again. The lyrics and the music are in a perfect mix, both of them are fantastic, and fit together perfectly. Every single song is a masterpiece in itself, there is not one that isn’t good or doesn’t live up to the ones before, every one sounds completely different from the one before. With eleven masterpieces, the CD itself an only be one as well.
There aren’t words to describe the CD, it has to be listened to. Over and over again.
5 out of 5 stars.
