Iron Man

May. 4th, 2008 04:29 pm
I just watched Iron Man. There were some scenes I watched five times because I had to wait while it loaded and stuff. I enjoyed it so, so much that I myself was surprised by it. I want more Iron Man movies. I watched it on my computer and I understand that it will be a lot better when I watch it on the big screen when it is easier to tell the characters apart. Hell, there as one scene where I mistook Pepper for Rhodey. Now I need to find someone to watch it with me. Maybe my dad.

I love Robert Downey Jr. and what blew my mind is that I liked the depiction of Tony's love interest Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). I usually hate the love interests that for some reason are in every super hero movie but Gwyneth Paltrow did a great job because it felt organic. She wasn't a girl who appeared in Tony's life an whom he had a one night stand with and for some reason he doesn't forget her. Pepper is there and Tony can't live without her because she does everything for him and he can rely on. She is an essential part of his life already and he doesn't see her as a hot girl he would like to sleep with, he takes her for granted and only gradually does he start to appreciate her but it's not like all of a sudden he is crazy about her and tries to pursue her. There is a reporter for Vanity Fair that has a thing for Tony and could easily have been chosen as the love interest and I would have been so fucking annoyed by that. But Gwyneth Paltrow was amazing. For one, she looked like a real red head, not like Kirsten Dunst with that weird dark red wig she had in Spider-Man. She felt natural. They could have used Jarvis instead but they found an interesting way to use Jarvis that didn't even bother me. At least, this way, he won't ever be able to bang Aunt May should there be an Avengers movie featuring Spider-Man though I highly doubt that that will happen.

I wrote a whole paragraph about Pepper, a love interest, and I'm not annoyed by her. Wow. Doesn't this prove that she is good? I know I had a rant about her before. I think I should continue with some Tony is awesome followed by Obediah is awesome and then Rhodey is awesome. This sentence isn't enough to point it out, so I'm seriously thinking about doing this. Maybe I'll stop after Tony though, let's see how I feel about it after a while. I mean, I should have a lengthy post once again.

Robert Downey Jr. is great as Tony. I felt like Tony Stark had actually jumped out of a well-written Iron Man comic book and was doing it himself. When I read that Robert Downey Jr. was cast as Tony Stark (no, I didn't get up in arms and say that is was a stupid casting), I was excited about it because even though I had never seen anything with Robert Downey Jr., I felt like he looked the part. I mean, the mustache is great. He has funny lines and he doesn't suddenly become a hero, he is more of a crazy thrillseeker and his turning point makes sense. It helps that he doesn't whine about his family being killed. It is mentioned in the first few minutes of the movie and then he makes a few remarks about his dad that make sense and that's it. There is Iron Man action but he isn't successful from the first minute on, there are many scenes where he fucks up and his armor doesn't always work perfectly. You see him in a trial and error phase which makes it so much fun to watch although probably quite painful to experience. You get characterization along with the creation of the armor and seriously, how often do you get great characterization. Elektra? Daredevil? Punisher? X-Men 3: The Last Stand? Catwoman? I'm serious about it. I love my comic book movies but I honestly recognize that some of them suck.

Obediah Stane doesn't show up all of a sudden and decide that Tony Stark needs to be destroyed. He doesn't want to get Iron Man out of the way, he wants to get rid of Tony. He has a motivation that makes sense and fits in with the realistic feel of the movie. He is what Tony Stark could have become if he hadn't been kidnapped and held prisoner by Afghan terrorists. He was on his best way of becoming Obediah. I also think that it's interesting that Tony and Obediah aren't rivals but friends. Obediah is Tony's mentor although Tony is the inventor and Obediah is the business man. Tony genuinely likes Obediah and viceversa. I feel like Obediah wanting to get rid of Tony is purely on a business level, not because he doesn't like Tony. It isn't explicitly said, but that's how I feel about it. Maybe I'm reading something into it; I've never read anything with Obediah, but I liked the movie portail.

And the last main character, James "Rhodey" Rhodes, the military man and good friend of Tony's, was like a stabilizing force in Tony's life which he obviously needs. Rhodey is the serious counterpart and it's great to watch the scenes he has knowing that sooner or later he will don the armor and become War Machine. I don't know if he will become War Machine right away or take the role of Iron Man first, but it's great anyway because they are planting new things already and don't introduce Rhodey in, say, the second movie to make him War Machine in the same movie. He doesn't come out of nowhere and this way it doesn't feel forced. Well, the writing may feel forced but I trust the makers of this movie to continue doing an incredible job.

Another thing I want to touch on is Tony's drinking that will become a major plot point in the second or third movie because it just is such an important part of the character. You see him drinking in this movie often but it isn't blatantly pointed out all the time, it just feels like something a billionaire playboy would do. He doesn't act under the influence of alcohol and he doesn't show signs of withdrawl when not drinking. It seems to be a part of the character that doesn't feel forced. It helps that he seems to enjoy whisky. His alcoholism that Favreau has already said will be something that will be explored in the sequels that like Rhodey doesn't show up all of a sudden, his drinking habits are already there albeit a lot more controlled.

And Stan; Stan was awesome.
