Friday the 13th
Jan. 13th, 2012 09:59 pmI'm not supersticious at all. I have lived through many Friday the 13ths without even realizing what day it was. This time, however, I got some bad luck, I guess.
I got a mail from SMcC yesterday about meeting up with him to talk about this class I took last summer. He wants me to retake the essay part of it. I met up with him today, he explained to me why I had to retake it. Basically, he felt like I needed to address the costumes and Denzel Washington more in the essay ... yes, apparently, that's reason enough for me to have to retake it. His one other complaint was that I can't call Keanu Reeve a talentless hack. Other than that, my essay was really good (he kept telling me that) and I have to get back into the whole subject for the essay on the 26th. Probably watch the movie again, read up on it a little. Keep in mind not to call Keanu a talentless hack again.
So, it's January 13th. I have until January 15th to sign up for the language finals I want to take. The meeting with SMcC took place at about 1pm. The office that handles manual sign-ups closed at noon. I wouldn't have used it because I can do all my sign-ups online but if I were studying to become a teacher, I'd have needed to do it till Friday, 12pm. I told him it was okay, that I'd do it when I got home tonight. It was all okay.
I drove home to my parents' place because my grandma who's been visiting is going back home on Tuesday and I wanted to see her one last time. While talking, I remembered that I needed to sign up for From Stage to Screen at around 8.30. I log in, do everything the way I always do and then I get a really fun surprise: I can't sign up for it. It's marked the same way all the other classes I signed up for are marked but it isn't on the list of things I have signed up for and I don't understand.
I wrote an email to tech support, to my advisor DH, to SMcC and to the head of the office that takes care of it (and was already closed when I talked to SMcC). I doubt anyone is going to read these emails before Monday, January 16th.
The economics department takes care of everything themselves instead of going through the same office and I know they have forms you can sign up for finals with. You can mail them in and as long as it's poststamped before or on the last day of sign-ups, it's okay and you get to take your final or you can just go there and drop it the form in a mailbox yourself and as long as it's there by the morning of the day after sign-ups are over, you're good.
I don't know if the general central office has that too or how they do things. I know that when I was still studying economics in the summer term 2011 and couldn't use the online sign-up, I just dropped by there and told a woman what I wanted to sign up for. I couldn't find a form like the one I know they use for economics, so I wrote a letter explaining the whole situation (I also mailed it in) and made copies. One I'm putting in the mail tomorrow. They will probably get it on Monday, Tuesday at the latest but it will have the post stamp on it that proves that I sent it in on January 14th, before the deadline. Also, I'm dropping by there on Sunday when I get back to Konstanz and looking for a mailbox or something I can leave another copy of the letter in. They'll find it on Monday morning.
And in case none of this works, though really, it should (right?), I think I have a one-time opportunity to beg my advisor DH to let me sign up late. I've already asked him in an email if I could use that option if nothing else works out though I hope it does. I'm usually really good about not missing deadlines and when I do, I know it's my fault but this time around it really wasn't.
So, happy Friday the 13th, I guess?
