Lorna Dane on M-Day
Apr. 2nd, 2006 01:01 pmA little, not that great ficlet on Polaris of the X-Men.
Lorna Dane, the X-Man Polaris, looks into the mirror and even though she sees herself, she doesn’t feel like herself. She has always been defined by her powers to control magnetism, but now they are gone, the part of her that has led her to become a hero has vanished. Now, she isn’t Polaris any longer, she is Lorna Dane.
Never again will she be able to do what she has done without much thinking in the past, never again will she fight evil. Now she is a mere woman without a purpose, with nowhere to go.
How could that have happened to her? Why her? She is the daughter of the most powerful mutant alive, Magneto, and she has been robbed of her powers. With such a father, one should be sure that the crisis would have no effect . How could she have been reduced to a mere homo sapiens?
She reaches up and touches her long, green hair. It had been the first hint, the first sign of her being a mutant and she has tried to hide it in the beginning. Now that she knows she has lost it, it angers her that once she wasn’t been proud of it. Her flowing hair is still green, but as it grows, it will turn to a normal colour, blond or brown perhaps, and she will look like an ordinary human being, the last little part of her mutancy will be lost and she will probably never again be able to restore it.
It sounds haughty and arrogant, but Lorna thought that she had the RIGHT to have her powers. She is the daughter of the best-known mutant on Earth, on Genosha she was nearly worshipped, called a princess ... She has been one of the few to survive the massacre on Genosha. She has been through so much and still, they have stripped her of her powers, of one of the things that defined her. She has no place to go now, nowhere to turn. She can’t stay at the mansion, there is no place for her, here. She can’t bear the thought of having to see the other mutants who still have their powers fight while she has to go hiding. No, she will have to leave, to follow this strange urge she is feeling. The future has something in store for her.
