A soft knock on the door made Face jump. He wasn’t used to knocks anymore, not when everybody in his life just barged in and out as they pleased. He grunted, assuming that it would be enough for whoever was at the door to come in.

The door opened and Kiew, dressed in a white nightie, came in.

“I know it’s late but …” she began but Face raised his hand to indicate that she didn’t need to continue speaking. She smiled lightly and came over to the bed, sitting down on it. “I wanted to check on you, considering that you haven’t stayed over in the headquarters for a while.”

Face laughed. “For you, this is an exception as well, darling,” he reminded her. “And I’m sure that it’s worse for you with Jamie being all by himself.”

“You don’t honestly think that Jamie is staying all by himself, do you? He’s with Tyler’s sister, so I’m not worried about him. What about Alice?”

“I don’t worry about Alice. That woman gets what she wants.” The way he said it should have convinced Kiew but it didn’t because he didn’t even make the effort to sound uplifting like he usually did when forced to talk about his marriage. Kiew didn’t know the man too well but she had known too many men to know that he was unhappy in his marriage.

“She got you,” she said quietly and Face nodded and although Kiew and Face weren’t particularly close she pulled his head into his lap and gazed down into his scarred face and started running her hand through his dark hair.

“You know you can just walk away if you want to, don’t you?”

“I’ve tried,” he sighed. I’ve tried multiple times but you have no idea how difficult it is. I don’t love her, hell, I don’t even like her, but getting away from her is difficult. I can’t run from her, not when I have my life here.”

“Why are you with her?”

“I don’t know. It happened without me ever realizing it and all I know is that I made a huge mistake by letting her come back into my life. I can’t even blame it on my penis because I’m not attracted to her.”

Kiew nodded, knowing exactly what he was talking about. “She’s not good for you, is she?”

He shook his head and the two of them understood each other.
