Summary: Jason and Tristan wait while Kyla is giving birth.
Notes: Jason is in his early twenties, Tristan a couple of years older. They have had a tense relationship in the past but at some point they become good friends after putting their differences aside. This takes place a little over eight months after Kyla and Jason broke up.
This should be the last thing I post today unless I find time do to the FotD which is awesome today. And something else about Jason because he got two pieces or so posted in a short time, and a third one won’t hurt.
And because those notes aren’t long enough, I’ll point out that I chose to post this piece because I like it and I want one I really like for my 100th.
Tristan paced back and forth nervously, his hands buried in the pockets of his dress pants. He had loosened his tie and looked disheveled in a way that Jason had never seen him before. “This isn’t supposed to happen yet. We were supposed to have more time.”
“Calm down,” Jason said from his place on the chair. He knew that a few months ago, he would be just as panicked about Kyla giving birth but after the months in Africa he had learned to stay calm in such instances, he had seen things that were a lot worse and Kyla was just giving birth, even though she was premature. “Dani is in there with her. She knows what she’s doing better than anyone else I can think of.”
“She should have gone to a fucking hospital,” Tristan insisted, wiping the sweat from his forehead. “I know she can’t but she should have. If something goes wrong …”
“She will be fine,” Jason assured the other man, surprised by how sure about it he was. He had always been the one to panic, Tristan the one who was in control but now that had changed. He had changed so much without noticing and he knew that it had nothing to do with the fact that he wasn’t in love with Kyla anymore. He still deeply cared about her; he had just gained a new perspective.
“Dani knows what she’s doing. She has delivered children under worse circumstances, Tristan. I have seen her do it, helped her with it once and the circumstances were a lot worse.” Jason got up and rested a hand on Tristan’s shoulder, forcing him to stop pacing and looking the older man in the eyes. “You have to relax. Just … just take a seat, it might take a while and it won’t help you any if you waste your energy.”
Tristan followed Jason’s advice and let Jason steer him towards the chairs, pressing him into one of them. “What happened to you, Jace? You are supposed to be more nervous than me, not the one to calm me down.”
“I’ve seen a lot of things happen in the past few months,” Jason explained touching his bearded chin. He had stopped shaving at some point and he looked older than Tristan now and while he would probably never have the maturity Tristan had, he was closer to it than he had ever been. “Dani said everything would be fine and I trust her. If she told us she’d handle it, then she will. Besides, Alfred is in there with her. If he had to, he’d deliver the baby all by himself like he delivered Kyla.”
Tristan laughed. “Damn it, Jason, you’re a biology student. I’m a high-ranking politician who can talk his way out of just about anything and yet I’m like a tense out-of-control fool.”
“You’ve got the right to be, Tristan,” Jason smiled. “Kyla is giving birth to your child in there right now months ahead of its time. I’d be concerned if you were all collected.”
Tristan looked at Jason, his eyes full of surprise. “Are you telling me that you think Kyla is giving birth to my child?” He shook his head. “No. I don’t know who the father is, but it’s certainly not me.”
For how Jason and Kyla broke up and the identity of the father (if you can) guess, check out punishment / tower / stranded that offers an in-depth look into Kyla’s mind. Besides, I love that piece.
