When Jaina saw a man with long, unkempt hair sitting at a small table in the bar she had just entered, she thought she was imagining things, but when she approached him, saw that his hair was black with silver streaks in it, she knew this could only be Kyp Durron, rogue and Jedi Master sitting here all by himself with a bottle of whiskey.
She wanted to just walk away again, but before she could do so, he looked up and noticed her, he had probably sensed her, she didn’t know why she hadn’t sensed him, they had shared such a close bond in the past and it couldn’t just have gone away, even though they had gone their separate ways since the Yuuzhan Vong war had ended.
She walked up to him, now that he had seen her, she couldn’t just walk away as she had planned to.
"You alone?" she asked.
He nodded and motioned to the bottle. "All by myself. Have a seat."
Jaina was happy to oblige, she had come here to drink anyway and although she had wanted to be alone, she didn’t mind Kyp’s company, she had always felt comfortable around him and still did after all these years.
"What are you doing here? I thought that now that you had found a girlfriend, you would never have to sit in gloomy bars again."
He sighed. "A fight."
She cocked a brow. She didn’t know anything about this girlfriend of Kyp’s, had never seen her, her uncle had mentioned that Kyp was seeing someone, no details. It seemed as if Kyp was pretty uptight about it, didn’t talk. "How can you have an argument with a woman who is okay with you? She has to be very liberal to want to be with someone like you, so what can lead to a fight?"
"It’s not that easy, nothing I really want to talk about. And you can’t tell me anything about the fact that I have to find a very tolerant mate, you are at least as complicated as I am. Talking about that, what are you doing here? Where’s your shadow, Zekk?"
"A fight," she answered, mimicking the way he has said it before.
He silently made a sign to the waiter, motioning him to bring another glass, then pushed his across the table to Jaina.
"You tell me about your fight, I tell you about mine," he offered.
"Deal," she agreed, taking a gulp of the whiskey. "You start."
"I met her a few months ago and all went so well between us, a bit too good. She didn’t mind my hair, she probably was the first one, and there is something I like about her although I can’t understand it, she is completely blind to the Force, it’s frightening."
Jaina nodded, she knew what he was talking about, she had experienced the same with Jag.
"After a few months though, some weeks ago, we started to get into fights about just everything. When we aren’t in bed or so, we are arguing all the time. This must be the tenth serious argument we had in the last three weeks and I just can’t stand it anymore. Whatever I do, she can only complain about it. I just don’t think it’s working out. I mean, come on, the tenth huge fight in three weeks, that’s just too much. So I broke up with her and here I am, pitying myself, drowning my sorrows in a glass of whiskey.
"So you’re available again?"
"Guess so. I think that’s how it’s meant to be, I’m just not meant to be with anyone, I’m supposed to be the eternal loner."
"I wish you’d find someone."
"I don’t think I want anyone. Not right now. I spent the years in which I could have looked for someone busy, blaming myself for, well, the things I did and now it’s just over."
"You’re not too old, Kyp. Nobody ever is."
"Stop trying to console me and tell me about your fight instead," he adviced her as he emptied his glass.
"It wasn’t really a fight. You know how things were going between Zekk and me ... or maybe you didn’t. Everybody around us was saying we were in a relationship but the truth is that we weren’t, I only feel for him in the way I feel about a brother or should feel for Jacen, right now we aren’t really best friends, I think I was trying to replace Jacen with Zekk. And tonight he told me that he doesn’t feel for me the way I feel for him, just like everyone said it would happen. And I don’t know, I’m just so mad at him right now, because he has been denying having any romantic feelings for me for months now, whenever we talked about it, he told me there was nothing and now I know it was a huge lie."
"You really don’t feel for him, huh?"
She shook her head no.
"Poor guy, I know how he must be feeling, but he has to move on, I mean, you were a cute little couple when you were about fifteen and now, ten years later, he still hasn’t realized that you have moved on. You must feel betrayed though."
"Yeah, kinda. I don’t really want to think about it."
"We have something in common then."
"We have so much in common that this doesn’t matter anymore, Kyp, it’s just another small thing."
"And all of it adds up to nothing."
"What do you mean?"
"Forget about it. It was something I shouldn’t have said."
They just looked at each other for a while, then Jaina asked, "Can I crash your place tonight? Zekk is probably waiting for me and I don’t want to see him right now."
"Well ..."
She bit her lip. "Please don’t tell me you live with your girlfriend."
"Negative," he said, shaking his head. "As if I’d be stupid enough to let anyone move in with me. I’ve known her for less than a year. It’s more likely that you become my roommate than that I meet some woman and agree to have her moving in with me. No problems."
"I can be quite a pain in the ass if I want to."
"I know, but you’re a pain in the ass I’m already used to and with you I know that there’s no danger of anything happening, no need to quickly find another place after a horrible break-up. I know you’re not interested in me and will never be interested enough for anything to happen."
"Well, actually ..."
"Actually what?" His green eyes examined her face that was turning red carefully.
"I was actually considering ... you know, as you are telling me I can stay at your place and stuff." She blushed even more.
"Don’t worry, Jay, I have no problems with that, if you’re implying that, I think we should be heading home right now with no further delay. We could make this a regular ritual." He got up, offered her his hand.
She sighed as she got up. "And here I had thought that this was the last thing I wanted right now. I wonder why it took me so long to realize why I had been staying away from you."
"Shut up," he told her, placing his finger on her lips and drawing her close. "Let’s wait till tomorrow to talk and indulge in other activities now."
And with that, they shared their first kiss, years after when it had been supposed to happen on Hapes after Anakin Solo’s death, but it was still good and for some strange reason it felt like this could actually become something.
